Welding repairs tank corrosion pitting
Article Abstract:
Unitor recommends using welding overlays to repair pitting corrosion in the hull of ageing tankers. Unlike the cold-repair technique, welding can bring damaged hull portions back to their original thickness and allows chemical bonding to occur between the deposit and the parent metal, making them virtually identical. Welding may be performed either through the MAG welding, conventional stick electrode welding or self-shielded welding technique, after considering the factors of deposition rate, operating factor and handling time.
