Polish owners wait on privatisation
Article Abstract:
Poland's shipping industry is awaiting the government's decision on privatizing the industry before streamlining its operations. While the government is bent on implementing privatization, no official announcements have been made. Polska Zegluga Morska, for instance, has instituted cost-cutting measures following a downturn in the market. Another firm, the Polish Ocean Lines has pulled out of the Atlantic area due to financial problems. Most of Poland's shipping firms have to be privatized to improve their efficiency.

Trouble lies ahead
Article Abstract:
The global shipping industry faces year 2000 transition problems due to its lack of preparedness. Unlike other sectors in business such as banking and aviation that have undergone programs to correct their problem as early as 1996, the shipping industry has done little if not nothing to deal with this. Disruptions that are expected to occur are wide ranging and include technical, business and behavioral areas. The areas most affected are shipping in Africa, South America, the Persian Gulf and Asia.
