Bow thruster doubles as emergency propulsion
Article Abstract:
Schottel's Pump-Jet, a steerable bow thruster, is also an independent emergency propulsion system for cargo ships. The Pump-Jet, powered by diesel engines, electric motors or hydraulic motors, performs better than a conventional unit. It also contains a 360 degree steerable thrust, which gives the redundant propulsion the power for increased maneuverability and steerability. The design of the Pump-Jet system, which includes an impeller, diffuser assembly and a bottom plate, meets the standards for heavy-duty continuous operation.

Article Abstract:
Many shipbuilders are increasingly using waterjet propulsion systems in their high-speed fleet carriers. Such systems provide considerable advantages over conventional propellers, including better fuel economy, reduced internal noise, good acceleration and protected propulsion installation. These systems also eliminate the need for reverse gearsets and long transmission lines, resulting in reduced overhead cost.
