Article Abstract:
Environmental and cost problems arising from the use of substandard bunker fuels by some shipbuilders led to SIT Germany's development of a fuel conditioning device called CD92. The device included a truncated conical rotor at the center that can be placed in different locations with an HFO system. When operated, huge amount of bunker fuels are utilized reducing sludges by more than 75%, consequently controlling hazardous emissions.

Mobil and Shell are using electronic systems to monitor oil conditions on board ships. Shell has an RLA Opica Windows-based system, using X400 email links to transmit data. Mobil has a DOS-based PFA Inter-Link system, According to Keith Forget, of the lubricant technical service of Shell, electronic monitoring of conditions can save thousands of pounds sterling for shipowners.
