Yards fall back on traditional expertise

Article Abstract:

Economic uncertainties and the lack of political support are preventing the South American shipbuilding industry from making further progress. The future of South America's shipbuilding industry remains uncertain, even though a number of shipyards in Chile, Brazil and elsewhere in South America are making advances in constructing more complex shipping vessels. But industry sources said that South American shipyards can fall back on their expertise in building small vessels, which are attracting interest because of the high level of river shipping in the region.

Yards weather crisis

Article Abstract:

The depreciation of the purchasing power of the Asian economies as a result of the regional financial crisis has contributed to a decline in new orders for fast ferries. The sudden availability of a large number of cargo vessels in the region has also caused a decline in global shipping rates. However, Asian shipping industry insiders are confident that the regional currency correction will result in a more competitive industry in terms of pricing.

Smaller yards working flat out

Article Abstract:

The shipbuilding market in the Middle East remains strong, as operators take advantage of increased volume of work. Despite relatively high prices, the number of orders coming from Middle East ship yards has continued to increase buoyed by increased docking capacity in the region. Shipbuilders are also looking forward to the construction of a 55,000 tlc floating dock in Suez and an additional graving dock in Ajman and Abu Dhabi.
