European agents are facing bigger threat than Internet

Article Abstract:

A prospective use of video-on-demand for the direct booking of holidays is likely to threaten European travel agents. According to the new managing director of travel agency Going Places, Tony Bennet, direct bookings will affect German and British agents the worst and could erode travel agent's bookings. He forecasts that travel agents' share of booking could drop to 50% by 2005, against 80% in 1995. Other technologies that are expected to impact on agents' business include the Internet and interactive kiosks.

Swimming against 'eco-tourism' tide: Marine environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau says that if you can't beat the 'eco-tourism' hype the best thing to do is show people how it is done

Article Abstract:

Jean-Michel Cousteau is a marine environmentalist and is linking with the Out Islands Promotion Board, American Eagle and US Divers, a marine equipment company, to encourage tourists to the area. He dislikes the 'eco-tourism' phrase, but believes the campaign to attract tourists to the unspoilt reefs of Bahama Out Islands as responsible tourism.
