Warming up
Article Abstract:
The UK leisure industry is likely to see strong performance in 1997, with total leisure spending predicted to rise by 6% in volume. There is likely to be further consolidation following deals including the purchase of Relaxion by Kunick and the purchase of Archer Leisure by Vardon. There will be particularly strong growth in the brewing sector, with brewers responding to changes in footfall by taking new sites. Key issues for the industry as a whole will include planning, especially as developers test PPG6.

A year of new challenges
Article Abstract:
The UK leisure industry is likely to face significant challenges in 1999 as the economy weakens. There will be strong emphasis on creativity and innovation, with many leisure concepts developed during the era of rapid leisure expansion being redeveloped. The health and fitness sector will have to prove to investors that it can survive the economic slowdown, but there will be a revival of interest in cabaret. There will be a strong progression towards consolidation.
