Flight to the West
Article Abstract:
Russian ballet dancer Irek Mukhamedov tells of his experience of defecting to the West in 1990. It was necessary to make all the arrangements secretly, but this also required asking favours of friends. Even as he left Moscow, he did not know whether it would actually be possible to defect, and he was unable to say goodbye properly to his parents. It was an extremely nerve-wracking experience, but there was a great sense of elation when he actually arrived in London, England.
