News about epidemics in India, Sweden and Zaire were greeted with the cancellation of travel plans to these areas. However, studies show that tourists' chances of contracting tropical diseases are practically nil. Still, people should take the necessary health precautions when traveling.

A poll of 250 Conde Nast Traveler readers reveals that many people have insufficient knowledge about travel health hazards. Although 95% knew the correct procedures to prevent malaria, only 10% knew that the cholera vaccine is not very effective.
