A colonization factor links Vibrio cholerae environmental survival and human infection

Article Abstract:

Vibrio cholerae, a Gram-negative bacterium is often found attached to exoskeletons of zooplanktons, which enhances chances of its survival, do not colonize humans but require strategies for survival in the environment. To support this hypothesis a single protein required for efficient intestinal colonization that mediates attachment to both zooplankton and human cells by binding to a sugar present on both surfaces is identified.

Virus on virus infects bacterium

Article Abstract:

Many bacteria carry DNA segments, known as pathogenicity islands. New findings about how bacteria acquire pathogenicity islands during evolution are presented by Karaolis and colleagues. They have shown that Vibrio cholerae pathogenicity island (VPI) is a filamentous bacteriophage that can transit itself between some strains of V. cholerae.
