A man for our season: Science is in a parlous state - passing fashions, a star system and the new cult of management have combined to strangle originality
Article Abstract:
Sciences throughout the world are jeopardized by changing practice and the erosion of principles, but a solution could be found from an appreciation of the philosophy of insect physiologist, Vincent Wigglesworth. He believed the main purpose of a scientist was to find solutions to problems based on keen observation of experimental material, rather than passing fashions and a star system. Today, rumour is the fuel of modern science and originality can be limited by journals who pander to fashion. Also, in Wigglesworth's day, an individual's record of excellence was recognized by research councils, but today, grants are based on frequent short term assessments, discouraging adventure.

Straight and wiggly affinities
Article Abstract:
Two new experiments report new findings associated with cell affinities. The studies, using the developing wing of the Drosophila, examine the question of whether engrailed genes specify affinities directly or indirectly. Details of the studies are presented.

The mechanisms that polarize cells within the plane of the epithelium could help to sense dimension is assumed. Three arguments that the polarity gradient, and not the morphogen gradient, specifies dimension are presented.
