A marriage of bone and nacre: Clinical experiments aimed at reducing bone loss in jaws raise a raft of interdisciplinary issues
Article Abstract:
An experiment using ground mother-of-pearl (nacre) from the bivalve mollusc Pinctada maxima, mixed with the blood of eight female patients suffering from bone loss in the upper jaw, has been undertaken. The mix was injected into tissues where bone was missing, and later biopsies showed not inflammatory reactions, and bone forming cells had been activated, with new healthy bone forming. Although nacre and bone are not homologous as such, some of the complicated machinery driving their formation may be.
