A naturalist in Antarctica: it's more than just the coldest continent; discover the three faces of perhaps the last best place on Earth

Article Abstract:

Visitors to Antarctica often come for its geopolitical or biological marvels and importance but discover a third, inner continent, founded on its spiritual and historical dimensions. A vast and fragile land of sea and ice, its future hangs in the balance for the next century as the two chief human demands upon it - science and tourism - seek a mutually beneficial accommodation. Recent signs of international and interdisciplinary cooperation are promising.
