A twofold tragedy unfolds
Article Abstract:
The competition between individuals for available resources, which are scarce but available to all individuals, is controlled by genetic methods. During meiosis, the competition between cooperative genes is suppressed by linkage between homologous chromosomes. In social insects, the workers suppress reproduction by other workers. However, this genetic inhibition is effective only if the cost of inhibition is low. An individual who does not impose the inhibition is benefitted while all other individuals are harmed. This harm can lessen provided the individuals are genetically related.
