Australians seek international allies in battle over uranium mine

Article Abstract:

Australian environment minister Robert Hill, wants to prevent Kakadu National Park being named as an endangered World Heritage site, in a dispute focusing on Jabiluka uranium mine which is being developed on the border of the park. The small Australian Democrat party recently won approval for investigations into the government's process for approving the Jabiluka project, with claims that the environmental impact assessment used by Hill lacked independent peer review by scientists. Scientists from Australian National University (ANU) found a significant risk of leakage into park wetlands of radioactivity from ore stockpiles, during unusually severe rainfall. Hill claims that natural values are not threatened.

Private nuclear waste plan faces critics in Australia

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable public opposition to plans by Pangea Resources Australia to establish a repository for high-level nuclear waste in the sedimentary basins spanning the states of Western and South Australia. Environmentalists believe that the company's prediction of geological stability in the region is not realistic, and this view is shared by some Australian geologists. Pangea envisages constructing dedicated ships and railways to import 2,000 tonnes of nuclear waste a year, up to a maximum of 75,000 tonnes.
