Best to go with what you know?

Article Abstract:

An understanding of how people decide the best option between the two basic impulses of what they know and exploring new options is discussed. The experiments show that no areas of the brain became more active during exploitation, but exploration is accompanied by stronger activation in the frontal polar cortex, an important region for control of cognitive functions.

A new perceptual illusion reveals mechanisms of sensory decoding

Article Abstract:

The misperception that preferentially weights signals from neurons whose responses best discriminate those directions is described. Results show that subjective experience of motion is not mediated directly by responses of sensory neurons, but is only developed after responses of these neurons are decoded.
