Black rats, island characteristics and colonial nesting birds in the Mediterranean: Consequences of an ancient introduction

Article Abstract:

The colonial nesting species restricted to island, are affected by devastation of island faunas. Black rats introduced in islands from six archipelagoes in the western Mediterranean cause local extinction or reduction in bird abundance. The presence of islands varying in size and substrate allows most archipelagos to retain their suite of colonial nesting bird species, even after reduced abundance for most species.
