Blueprint for the white plague: with annual deaths from Mycobacterium tuberculosis estimated at around three million, this single pathogen claims more human lives than any other
Article Abstract:
A new perspective on Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been presented, with the complete sequence of its genome reported by Steward Cole and colleagues. M tuberculosis has spread during periods of urbanization and there are now some drug resistant forms. The increased susceptibility to tuberculosis is also linked with the early stages of HIV infection. Its genome sequence has 4.4 million base pairs, and encompasses a putative cell-entry protein, similar to pathogenicity islands seen in other bacterial pathogens.

Creation of a biologically active interleukin-5 monomer
Article Abstract:
The addition of eight amino acids to loop 3 present between helices C and D of interleukin 5 (IL-5) generates a monomer, whose biological activity is similar to that of IL-5. The monomer is formed by deleting residues from the IL-5's C-terminal or N-terminal, and inserting amino acids from the granulocyte-macrophage-colony-stimulating factor into the gap formed. The monomer induces proliferation of the IL-5-responsive TF-1 cell line. A single helical bundle regulates the functions of IL-5.

Differential production of interferon-gamma and interleukin-4 in response to Th1- and Th2-stimulating pathogens by gamma-delta T cells in vivo
Article Abstract:
The intracellular cytokines and the T-cell generation of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and the interleukin-2 (IL-2) in mice infected with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and Listeria monocytogenes are identified using flow cytometry. The cytokine generation is stimulated by several pathogens by two different processes. The investigation reveals that the gamma delta T cells are actively involved in the initiation of the immune responses when the mice are infected.
