Charges fly in $1bn hormone patent battle
Article Abstract:
A jury is deliberating over whether Genentech Inc infringed a University of California patent for DNA for human growth hormone, after a six week trial, and following nine years of legal conflict. The university is seeking $400 million in back royalties and interest for the alleged infringement, and is seeking that the amount be triple due to alleged wilful misconduct by Genentech. Genentech has denied patent infringement, claiming that its the DNA for human growth hormone was constructed independently by its scientists in 1979.

Bumpy ride for 'core e-journals' project
Article Abstract:
The future of a project in electronic use of scientific journals by the California State University (CSU) system and Alabama-based EBSCO Information Services is now uncertain. The university is getting fewer journals than it had sought as EBSCO was unable to persuade other journals to join the agreement, although EBSCO claims that the university did not want to spend more money. Each CSU library must in future buy any extra journals from its own budget.
