Clinton's science adviser embroiled in 'book-burning' row over risk bill

Article Abstract:

Republican Rep Robert Walker told Bill Clinton that Jack Gibbons, Clinton's science adviser and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, has been indulging in name calling over the Republican environmental legislation calling for more risk assessment. The situation has become more confrontational after Republicans gained control of Congress in Nov 1994 and Republicans are charging Gibbons with inappropriate partisan behavior. Gibbons' unexpected virulence may be linked to Republican efforts to disband the Office of Technology Assessment.

Hanford faces up to its nuclear hangover

Article Abstract:

Hanford Engineering Works (Hanford) in Washington state is widely regarded as the country's worst environmental disaster. The country's top plutonium production facility for much of the Cold War, Hanford's problems include leaking tanks containing highly radioactive waste and some 2,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel. Existing cleanup efforts have helped to contain the radiation but many scientist believe that present strategies are unrealistic and technically flawed.
