Cooperative breeding in the white-throated magpie-jay. How do auxiliaries influence nesting success?

Article Abstract:

Auxiliaries enhance the nesting success of white-throated magpie-jay at each stage of the nesting cycle and increase their cooperative breeding behavior. The increased breeding success rates are attributed to early onset of first laying, decreased predation of eggs and chicks, and enhanced hatchability rates all affected by good helpers. Predation is the major cause of diminished breeding success rates and post-laying nest success. Increased hatchability relies mainly on the occurrence of egg predation and hatching failure.

Variance in male mating success and female choice for persuasive courtship displays

Article Abstract:

The sexual behavior of the North American plethodontid salamander, Desmognathus ocoee, was studied to determine whether courtship displays by males evolve through sexual selection of the females. The mating success for individual males varied from 14% to 69% relative to multiple potential mates for different encounters. The males' abilities to arouse or convince females to copulate were proposed to account for the differences in male mating success rates.
