Courtship role reversal and deceptive signals in the long-tailed dance fly, Rhamphomyia longicauda

Article Abstract:

The secondary sexual characters in the role-reversed, lekking behavior of female long-tailed dance flies, Thamphomyia longicauda Loew were examined to test the hypothesis that the rate of abdominal distention is a signal about he state of egg development. It is concluded that the females deceive mat-seeking males with the aim of obtaining a protein meal in exchange for copulation.

Sexual selection and the evolution of exclusive paternal care in arthropods

Article Abstract:

An investigation is conducted into the sexual selection of arthropods and the development of paternal care by reducing paternity assurance and increasing promiscuity of males. The results support the theory that in arthropods, certain male behaviours are traits on which sexual selection has acted.
