DNA fingerprints from fingerprints
Article Abstract:
Objects which have been handled can yield the DNA of the handler. Objects held by a number of handlers produced the most DNA for the last handler, although DNA of other handlers was also present. DNA was transferred between individuals via a one minute handshake in 25% of hands tested, showing that it can be difficult to interpret genetic profiles from small blood stains on objects which have been handled or from objects handled by a number of people. Genetic profiles were obtained from pre-cleaned objects held for just 15 minutes.

Pet cat hair implicates murder suspect
Article Abstract:
Single tandem repeat (STR) loci is increasingly used in DNA fingerprinting to compare genotypes. The characterization of STR loci in domestic species such as cats and dogs can lead to identification with high statistical confidence. A homicide case is described where a hair at the scene of the crime matched the composite STR genotype of the suspect's pet cat. The method of isolating and characterizing the STR loci is detailed.
