Designing Systematic Conservation Assessments that Promote Effective Implementation: Best Practice from South Africa

Article Abstract:

Key components of a successful conservation planning process, drawn from eight plans implemented in South Africa, include stakeholder collaboration, conservation assessment team skills, planning process design, and mainstreaming and interpretation of data for stakeholders. The important role of social learning institutions is also discussed.

The Environmental Limits to Globalization

Article Abstract:

The negative environmental effects of globalization include increases in pollution levels, declines in biodiversity, and acceleration of climate change. It is recommended that both the social and the environmental problems resulting from globalization should be addressed as interrelated issues.

Wildfire Policy and Public Lands: Integrating Scientific Understanding with Social Concerns across Landscapes

Article Abstract:

The authors advocate conservation management plans that reduce fuel loads in urban-wilderness interface zones, but do not disturb the integrity of watersheds, soil, or water supplies. Greater community responsibility and public involvement are recommended.
