Entropy difference between the face-centred cubic and hexagonal close-packed crystal structures

Article Abstract:

The face-centered cubic phase of crystalline spheres is more stable by about 0.005RT per mol than the hexagonal closed-packed phase. This implies that the entropy difference is at 0.005R for all temperatures until the melting point. The two crystal structures share the same close-packed volumes and enjoy similar equations of state. However, their distinct structures suggest that they have different thermodynamic properties and stabilities.

Similarity of active-site structures

Article Abstract:

The crystalline form of hydrolase enzymes resemble each other in their conjunctions of active-site groups. Specifically, the side chains of Glu 166 and Asp 170 evinced a striking structural resemblance to the side chains of the catalytic aspartates. For both aspartic proteinases and beta-lactamase enzymes, the crystal configurations trigger the functioning of the bound water molecule.

Crystal structures of the membrane-binding C2 domain of human coagulation factor V

Article Abstract:

A mechanism of calcium-independent, stereospecific binding of facts Va and VIIIa to phospholipid membranes is proposed. This is based on immersion of hydrophobic residues at the apices of loops in the apolar membrane core, interactions with phosphatidylserine head groups and favourable contacts of basic side chains with negatively membrane phosphate groups.
