Experimental evidence for mutual inter-and intrasexual selection favouring a crested auklet ornament

Article Abstract:

Crested auklets have crest ornaments during the breeding season, whether they are male or female. Crest length is linked to dominance in interactions between birds of the same sex and age, though adults dominate juveniles, and males dominate females, whatever their crest lengths. The male birds also respond to models with long crests by showing less agression. Models with long crests also elicit more frequent mating displays from bids of the opposite sex to that represented by the model.

Alliances II. Rates of encounter during resource utilization: A general model of intrasexual alliance formation in fission-fusion societies

Article Abstract:

A general model for alliance formation in fission-fusion societies based upon the rates at which individuals encounter each other in competition for resources is presented. A sex difference in alliance formation arises in the model even when encounter rates are the same for each sex, if there is a sex difference in the duration of resource defense.
