Extension of chromatin accessibility by nuclear matrix attachment regions
Article Abstract:
The possibility that matrix-attachment regions (MARs) can extend the accessibility of chromatins to more distal positions was investigated through an examination of the immunoglobulin gene. Although the mu gene enhancer can establish local areas of accessible chromatin, it was able to mediate chromatin accessibility only at the proximal site. To confer accessibility upon the distal promoter, a flanking MAR is required. This shows that MARs and the mu enhancer collaborate to generate an extended domain of accessible chromatin.

Down memory lane
Article Abstract:
Researchers have shown that the inhibition of histone deacetylases can improve memory capabilities in a genetically engineered mouse model of neurodegeneration in the central nervous system (CNS). The results have implicated the regulation of chromatin structure in long-term brain plasticity involving a range of CNS-based phenomena, long-term memory formation and the regulation of visual-system development.
