Retention of transcriptionally active cryptophyte nuclei by the ciliate Myrionecta rubra

Article Abstract:

The retention of cryptophyte nuclei by the photosynthetic ciliate of Myrionecta rubra is analyzed and they are shown to be transcriptionally active and service plastids derived from multiple cryptophyte cells. The expression of cryptophyte nuclear-encoded gene involved in plastid function reduced in Myrionecta rubra as the sequestered nuclei disappeared from the population, whereas cytokinesis, plastid performance and their replication are found to be dependent on recurrent stealing of cryptophyte nuclei.

Transcription and RNA interference in the formation of heterochromatin

Article Abstract:

The role of transcription associated with the RNA interference (RNAi) system is examined to find out how heterochromatin formation is targeted and maintained in specific regions of the genome. The results have shown that maintenance of silencing is a consequence of heterochromatic formation, heritable even in the absence of the initial RNAi stimulus.

Cryptophyte algae are robbed of their organelles by the marine ciliate Mesodinium rubrum

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning an investigation into the endosymbiosis of a ciliate and an algae which results in the phytoplankton form Mesodinium rubrum which is responsible for coastal red-tides.
