Fair payment or undue inducement?

Article Abstract:

The ethical guidelines issued by the US National Academy of Sciences, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the state of Massachusetts have stated that women who donate their eggs for embryonic stem-cell research can receive financial compensation for their direct expenses only. Many activists have argued that women donating oocytes for stem-cell research should be compensated in the same way as other healthy research volunteers for their time, effort and inconvenience.

Safeguards for donors

Article Abstract:

The different perspectives on the ethics of donating human eggs for research purposes are under the threat of complicating the international collaboration. In April 2005, the US National Academies issued guidelines stating that women who donate eggs for research should receive only direct expenses, such as travel to the clinic, and the International Society for Stem Cell Research is drafting guidelines on these issues as well as on safeguarding donors.
