Female fur seals show active choice for males that are heterozygous and unrelated

Article Abstract:

A remarkable amenable system based on Antarctic fur seal Arctocephalus gazella breeding at Bird Island, South Georgia, is utilized to investigate the basis of female choice in a strongly polygynous pinniped. The results have shown that females move further to maximize balance between male high multilocus heterozygosity and low relatedness, indicating that female choice can be vital even in a polygynous species and also help in resolving the lek paradox.
