First evidence of a venon delivery apparatus in extinct mammals

Article Abstract:

Evidence of a venom delivery apparatus in extinct mammals, documented by well-preserved specimens recovered from late Paleocene rocks in Alberta, Canada, is reported. Although classified within Eutheria, these mammals are phylogenetically remote from modern insectivora and have evolved specialized teeth as salivary venom delivery systems (BDSs) that differ markedly from one another and from those of Solenodon and shrews.

Pleistocene to Holocene extinction dynamics in giant deer and woolly mammoth

Article Abstract:

A view on spectacular megafaunal species, the giant deer or 'Irish elk', that survived to around 6,900 radiocarbon yr in western Siberia more than three millennia later its previously accepted terminal date is presented. Both giant deer and woolly mammoth before their extinction underwent dramatic shifts in distribution, driven largely by climatic or vegetational changes.

The phylogenetic position of the 'giant deer' Megaloceros giganteus

Article Abstract:

A new phylogenetic analysis of giant deer Megaloceros giganteus, which covers morphological and DNA sequence evidence is presented. Results include the successful extraction and sequencing of DNA from this extinct species and it is found that both sets of data independently support an early idea that the giant deer was closely related to today's much smaller fallow deer.
