Floater clustering in a standing wave

Article Abstract:

A demonstration that drifting small particles concentrate in either the nodes or antinodes of a standing wave, depending on whether they are hydrophilic or hydrophobic, as a result of surface-tension effect that violates Archimedes' law of buoyancy, is presented. A suspension of hydrophilic hollow glass spheres of average size 30 micrometers and density 0.6 gcm(super -3) is used to observe the opposite direction of drift and to study smaller particles.

Structural basis for synthesis of inflammatory mediators by human leukotriene [C.sub.4] synthase

Article Abstract:

The crystal structure of the human leukotriene [C.sub.4] (LT[C.sub.4]) synthase is presented in its apo and glutathione (GSH)-complexed forms. The results have provided new structural insights into the mechanism of LT[CF.sub.4] formation and have indicated that the binding and activation of GSH might be common for a family of homologous proteins that are important for inflammatory and detoxification responses.

Functional architecture of the retromer cargo-recognition complex

Article Abstract:

The crystal structure of human retromer cargo-recognition VPS29-VPS35 subcomplex is reported. It shows the scaffolding activity of the metallophosphoesterase-fold subunit VPS29 for the carboxy-terminal half of VPS35.
