Foundations funding biomedical bodies 'should shift focus.'
Article Abstract:
Private foundations should focus on aiding academic biomedical bodies to adjust to the scenario of tight federal funding, rising financial pressures on medical cetres and the growing corporate role in research. Their continuing emphasis on fellowships and doctoral training may lead to more and more mismatch between training and job prospects. Instead, they should attempt to meet industry's demand for increased interdisciplinary training and encourage smaller laboratories to flourish. Universities should seek ways other than grants for funding scientific infrastructure.

...But seeks 'practical' gene therapy deals
Article Abstract:
Major pharmaceutical companies in San Francisco, CA are willing to invest in the biotechnology industry in spite of failures in experimental gene therapies. Hoechst Marion Roussel has signed a $150 million gene therapy agreement with Cell Genesys Inc., and two $50 million deals with Lynx and Incyte. Rhone Poulenc Rorer also announced a $25 million agreement with AASTROM Biosciences Inc. on gene therapy. The primary motive behind all these investments is to develop contacts with research groups that can provide clinical data on the operation of disease genes.
