French anger over plan to back British synchrotron
Article Abstract:
The French government will support the construction of a new synchrotron facility in Britain rather than France, but the planned British 3-GeV synchrotron will fall short of the requirements of the 2,000 French scientists who depend on such facilities for their experiments. Director of the laboratoire de l'Utilization du Rayonnement Electromagnetique (LURE) at Orsay, Robert Comes, and deputy directors Jean Daillant and Abderrahmane Tadjeddine, have refused to cooperate with the plan.

Oil back on the global agenda
Article Abstract:
World oil supplies will probably become inadequate by the year 2017 if the economies of developing countries continue to expand at their present rate. The supply of fossil fuels will become severely limited shortly after this point unless global leaders make rapid preparations for the use of alternative energy sources. Optimistic forecast calculations indicate that 50% of the rest of the world's oil will be used up by the year 2011. Other more realistic calculations are given.
