'Frontiers' grants count cost of success

Article Abstract:

The Human Frontiers Science Program (HFSP) is currently able to approve only one in eight applications for research grants and one in four applications for long-term fellowships. So far, HFSP, launched at the initiative of the Japanese government in 1989, has been able to distribute $414 million to researchers worldwide. However, it will now have to resolve urgent issues relating to its future financing. Partner states agreed in 1997 to a voluntary increase in their contributions, but few have been able to make these increases so far.

Brussels bids for framework 'top-up' funds

Article Abstract:

European Union's research commissioner Edith Cresson decided that potential top-up funds of ECU700 million from the fourth European Union Framework programme will be allocated to five task forces, set up to promote research in new technologies. Scepticism is observed regarding the allocation and usage of the fund. Also discussed are efforts of Europe's national research councils to control the funds and the progress made by different task forces.

Heat rises over Brussels FP5 proposals

Article Abstract:

Draft proposals concerning the European Union's fifth Framework research program are generating tensions between the various political bodies tasked to approve them and the scientific community. Foremost among the contested issues include how the EC intends to apportion its ECU15 billion budget, how the role of basic research will be protected and how the proposed matrix-style management system can be made to work efficiently.
