Gardens in full bloom

Article Abstract:

Botanical gardens are the only places that have the skills to adapt the landscape to changing conditions. The two traditional scientific specialties of botanical gardens are plant taxonomy, the discovering, naming and sorting of species; and whole-organism biology, the study not of the ecosystem of the wild tulip, or the cellular functions that the tulip hares with a bunch of other plants, but of the tulip itself.

More flavor up front

Article Abstract:

Senomyx of La Jolla, California, and New Jersey-based Linguagen are using high-throughput techniques pioneered by the drug industry to scan thousands of compounds for their impact on human taste receptors. If they succeed they could revolutionize food manufacture by dramatically shrinking the amount of sugar, salt and other flavorings used by the industry.
