Northern right whales have been protected by international agreement from commercial whaling since 1995, yet their population remains low. Entanglement with buoys and fishing gear have dropped northern right whale numbers to less than 300 as of the beginning of 1999.

The panther's new genes

A genetics project has helped recover the Florida panther species. In 1995, females were brought from Texas and released in southern Florida to strengthen the gene pool in the region and prevent health problems associated with inbreeding.
