Great moments in disorder
Article Abstract:
Schiffer and colleagues report the creation of spin-ice behavior in an array of nanoscale magnets, which is stable at room temperature and possesses magnetic moments large enough to be observed directly. This offers a new approach to understanding and exploiting the properties of disordered systems and emphasizes the potential of designed magnetic arrays, not only as model systems for the study of disorder, but also as the basis of technological applications.
