Hakalau Forest NWR

Article Abstract:

Staff at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge at Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii have faced significant challenges as they have sought to exclude cattle and pigs from the area. The refuge has been split into 18 feral ungulate management units, of which eight have been enclosed so far. It has been possible to remove more than 1,100 pigs and 260 wild cattle, and six of the eight fenced units are now cattle free, with three being pig free. It has also been necessary to take action against invasive weeds such as gorse and prickly Florida blackberry. Staff are also seeking to reestablish native species.

Conserving species at Fort Bragg

Article Abstract:

Fort Bragg in North Carolina contains a rich and biologically diverse ecosystem that hosts numerous rare plants and animals. It is home to five endangered species, including the Saint Francis' satyr butterfly, the red-cockaded woodpecker and Michaux's sumac. The base is working with the Nature Conservancy and State agencies to protect the Saint Francis' satyr, and has teamed up with the Center for Plant Conservation to study certain plants. Meanwhile the Army, on behalf of Fort Bragg, is funding a project to protect the red-cockaded woodpecker.
