High plains speedster

Article Abstract:

The pronghorn antelope has many physiological adaptations that contribute to its 45-mph to 50-mph running speed. Its heart, lungs and windpipe are oversized to permit greater oxygen intake. The pronghorn's unusual muscle tissue, densely populated with oxygen-burning mitochondria, allows it to use oxygen at a rate higher than normal for an animal of its size. Its split hooves, which contain no nerves, function as efficient shock absorbers, even on stony ground. The pronghorn's bones are unusually strong because of their high density. Other biological and behavioral aspects of the pronghorn are discussed.

City of rocks

Roxborough State Park, 20 miles south of Denver, CO, is the only state park prohibiting mountain bikes, rock climbing, horses and pets. The park is located in a transition zone between plains and mountains and this provides a rich environment for many animal and plant species.
