Local population density and the activation of movement in migratory band-forming Mormon crickets
Article Abstract:
Density-dependent phase polyphenism was tested by quantifying the effects of long-term differences in rearing density versus the short-term presence or absence of conspecifics on Mormon cricket movement behavior across three different developmental stages. The results indicate that interindividual interactions play a greater role in inducing the movement of migratory band-forming Mormon crickets than do endogenous behavior-phase changes mediated by high local rearing density.

Food choices of solitarious and gregarious locusts reflect cryptic and aposematic antipredator strategies
Article Abstract:
The effect of hyoscyamine, a plant alkaloid that protects against predators, on solitarious- and gregarious-phase locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, is examined. It is shown that phase differences in locust feeding behavior form part of integrated cryptic and aposematic antipredator strategies that also include differences in coloration and aggregation.

Is there an intraspecific role for density-dependent colour change in the desert locust?
Article Abstract:
Research of the desert locust is presented to describe the adaptive importance of density-dependent colour polyphenism. Nonmoving solitarious phase coloration is shown to substantially raise the activity levels of gregarious locusts.
