Highly concentrated seismicity caused by deformation of Kilauea's deep magma system

Article Abstract:

Shallow earthquakes in the rift zones of the Hawaiian volcano Kilauea result from growing stress concentration above the deeper aseismic portion. The Kilauea rift system deforms in response to the seaward displacement of the south flank of the volcano. Earthquake relocation techniques reveal the presence of a narrow ribbon that gives vertical strike-slip faults, which extend along the rift. This pattern of seismicity results in mechanical erosion of locked patches along the major strike-slip faults.

Streaks of microearthquakes along creeping faults

Article Abstract:

Aseismically produced crustal faults generate large numbers of small earthquakes, which are usually interpreted as coming from localized patches of the fault. The accurate location of large numbers of microearthquakes from faults in California and Hawaii, shows that the locations actually define highly concentrated streaks, characteristically aligned in the direction of fault slip.

The use of earthquake rate changes as a stress meter at Kilauea volcano

Article Abstract:

The link between stress changes in the Earth's crust and the occurrence of earthquakes has led to the idea that stress changes can be calculated from rates of earthquake occurrence, but calculations have proved unreliable. Two new, more accurate methods are described.
