How a warbler chooses its habitat: field support for laboratory experiments
Article Abstract:
Hooded warblers were studied in Mexico during the aftermath of Hurricane Gilbert, to assess sex-specific preferences for certain types of habitat, and females were found to prefer sites with more horizontal branches, while males preferred vertical branches, regardless of height. The hurricane increased the number of trees with horizontal branches, but left most trees standing, and females appear to have populated areas previously only occupied by males. This sex-linked habitat preference in the wild, backs a laboratory experiment where warblers showed similar sex-linked preferences for vertical and horizontal black paper stripes.

Reed warbler orientation: initiation of nocturnal migratory flights in relation to visibility of celestial cues at dusk
Article Abstract:
A new study investigates the link between migratory flight initiation and the visibility of celestial orientation clues in the nocturnal migrant, the reed warbler. It is shown that the visibility of stars in particular is an important cue for initiating nocturnal migratory flight.
