How not to protect databases

Article Abstract:

The World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva has the controversial database protection treaty on its agenda in addition to protection of the literary and artistic works. However, as database compilation lacks creativity, many publishers have been affected. The impact of the treaty needs to be assessed, as the word database subsumes climate data, gene sequences, and other scientific data, which have been gathered using public funds. Such protected data may then be sold by commercial organization, turning public good to private benefits.

Swiss reject GM trial to protect organics

Article Abstract:

The office for environment, forestry and agriculture in Switzerland (BUWAL) has refused to allow AgrEvo of Germany, a plant biotechnology company, to undertake field trials of its genetically modified herbicide-resistant T25 maize, as the chosen site was too close to organic farms. BUWAL believes that the risk of contaminating organic crops could not be ruled out. Switzerland's rules on the release of GM organisms are being revised under the 'Gen-Lex motion' aimed at coordinating laws relating to genetic engineering.
