Identification of cathode materials for lithium batteries guided by first-principles calculations

Article Abstract:

It has been established that first-principles calculations can direct the search for possible cathode materials. This approach has made it possible to identify a large class of new candidate materials in which transition metals are replaced with non-transition metals. It is clear that the intercalation potential of solid solutions, and probably those of other structures such as the spinel, can be 'quantum-engineered.' Aluminium is light and inexpensive, and can therefore substantially boost energy density while reducing cost.
