Illinois' endangered species program: an innovative approach

Article Abstract:

The endangered species program of Illinois was created in Oct 1972 after the passage of the Endangered Species Act. It made the sale, transfer and possession of products derived from endangered animals illegal and provided specific penalties for violators. The Endangered Species Protection Board and the Dept of Conservation were tasked toimplement the state's species protection program. Two major initiatives were launched under the program, namely, the creation of a process for permitting the ownership or disposal of endangered animals and their products and the adoption of an official list of endangered species.

Spider conservation in the United States

Article Abstract:

Spiders may help stabilize insect populations, and they are an important food source for birds, wasps, lizards and other animals. Their silk also provides nesting materials for birds. A number of spider species appear on threatened species lists. They may be affected by habitat loss, alien species such as alien ants, pollution and pesticides. Two spiders receive particular federal protection, the tooth cave spider and the spruce-fir moss spider. There is a need for closer links between conservationists and arachnologists, and for more public education.
