Imaging the nonlinear grating in frequency-doubling fibres

Article Abstract:

Exposure to chemicals, such as hydrofluoric acid, reveals the presence of gratings in optical fibers. The grating remains intact after the chemical reaction. Macroscopic separation of charge at the boundary between the fiber core and cladding causes the grating. The intensity of the internal electric field in the fibers affects the rate of etching. The direct images of grating in germanosilicate optical fibers are given.

Surgery by sunlight on live animals

Article Abstract:

The authors have investigated the application of solar radiation for surgery. They report the use of interstitial fiber-optic solar surgery to kill tissue in live animals, and demonstrate that the highly concentrated sunlight produces the same damage that can be achieved during the laser surgery.

A bottleneck for optical fibers

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the characteristics of optical fibres which are used by the communications industry. The capability of the fibres to carry high frequency light signals and their wide transmission bandwidth are discussed.
