Article Abstract:

Ralph Cicerone, the new president of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), would have to work with a US administration that has often clashed with scientists over findings that oppose its approved policy and balancing science and politics is a basic characteristic of his new job. Cicerone is best known for his contribution to work in the mid-1970s showing that human activities could damage Earth's protective ozone layer.

Drilling for truth in New Orleans: A geologist's story

Article Abstract:

David Rogers, a geologist from the University of Missouri, Rolla has described his role in investigating the failure of the levee system, which collapsed when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, flooding New Orleans. He has described about his report on the disaster funded by the National Science Foundation, which goes beyond explaining the geology and blames the elected officials for much of the chaos.

Who is Mark Myers?

Article Abstract:

The US President George W. Bush plans to nominate Mark Myers as the head of the US Geological Survey (USGS). Mark Myers has a PhD in geology and has spent much of his career in Alaska, working for oil companies and for the state, sometimes alone in remote locations while he also served in the Air Force Reserve for 26 years, for a time in intelligence in Alaska's far north.
