Individual coping characteristics, aggressiveness and fighting strategies in pigs

Article Abstract:

The way in which individual coping characteristics of pigs were predictive of aggression during social encounters and the resulting social status is examined. The results indicate that low-resisting pigs are flexible in using aggression, whereas the high level of aggression of high-resisting pigs regardless of their success in encounters suggests that these animals are more rigid in their aggressive behaviour.

Discrimination of conspecifics by juvenile domestic pigs, Sus scrofa

Article Abstract:

The ability of 6-week-old female pigs to discriminate between pairs of female conspecifics in a Y-maze is investigated. It is seen that the pigs, which were rewarded after each correct choice, learned faster than the pigs, which were rewarded after each incorrect choice.

Aggression and group is domesticated pigs, Sus scrofa: 'when the winner takes it all and the loser is standing small'

Article Abstract:

A novel theoretical model that describes how aggression among unacquainted pigs is a function of group size is presented. The conclusion states that pigs are able to alter their behavior according to how the actual competitive situation changes with group size.
