Making make-up in Ancient Egypt
Article Abstract:
Green, white and black make-up has been used extensively throughout history, and cosmetic powders dating from between 2000 and 120 BC, preserved in their original containers, have been investigated. Two natural lead-based compounds, galena and cerussite, as well as laurionite and phosgenite were found. Laurionite and phosgenite are rare in nature and are found as corrosion products of lead artefacts. It appears that they were synthetic products manufactured by the Egyptians using wet chemistry.

Magnet levitation at your fingertips
Article Abstract:
Stable levitation has been shown for diamagnetic objects including superconducting pellets and live creatures. An experiment to lift a magnet through the application of a magnetic field and the stabilizing of the unstable equilibrium with repulsive force from a diamagnetic material, was undertaken. The forces created by the almost non-magnetic materials were found to be enough to stabilize levitation over distances of several millimeters under Earth gravity.
